The impressive façade of the main building of the Humboldt University shows that the building on the boulevard Unter den Linden was actually intended to be another royal palace.
The main building of Berlin's Humboldt University is located in the center of the city. The building on the magnificent boulevard Unter den Linden was erected as the third building of the Forum Fridericianum from 1748 to 1766. The building was intended to be a palace for Prince Heinrich of Prussia, Friedrich II's brother. Friedrich had already lost interest in the planned palace in the center of Berlin during its construction. He was drawn to Potsdam, to his already built Sanssouci Palace.
After the prince's death, the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm III donated the building to the then Royal Friedrich Wilhelm University of Berlin. In order to meet the requirements of a university, the building was extended by two side wings between 1913 and 1920. Since then, the Humboldt University has had an H-shape. The building was badly damaged during the Second World War. After the end of the war, the university was rebuilt according to the historical model. It was then given the name Humboldt University. A statue in front of the main building commemorates the two namesakes.
