Every year on June 21, Berliners celebrate the beginning of summer with an open-air music festival. At the Fête de la Musique, musicians and bands play live music in the streets of Berlin for free.

Bonjour au Soleil - a greeting to the sun! Every year at the beginning of summer, Berlin celebrates the Fête de la Musique. The citywide open-air music festival is a French tradition and has been celebrated annually in Berlin since 1995. Amateurs and professionals of all musical styles and genres show off their skills in public for free.

Live Music All over the City

Thanks to a special permit for street musicians, acoustic music can be played on public streets, squares and green spaces throughout Berlin from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. on June 21, provided it does not disturb facilities worthy of protection, such as hospitals, schools or memorials. Musicians are expected to play at more than 80 locations all over Berlin.

Early start and long night: New stage times for anniversary

A special highlight of the 30th Fête de la Musique in the year 2025 are the new "opening hours" of the stages: In this anniversary year, all stages are allowed to start their program from 2 p.m., instead of 4 p.m. as before. In addition, open-air stages can play until midnight - usually, the musical hustle and bustle always ends at 10 p.m.

Fête de la Nuit: Music and Dance after Dark

The Fête de la Musique doesn't have to end at midnight. Almost 30 venues offer music into the night: many clubs, cafés, bars and pubs that start in the afternoon continue the program indoors, including Yaam, Cassiopeia and Gretchen. There are also night-only stages such as the Junction Bar, the Tresor Club, Ritter Butzke, Blackland, Mein Haus am See, Musik & Frieden, Burg Schnabel, Wabe and the Old CCCP Bar.

History of the Fête de la Musique

The Fête de la Musique was founded by Jack Lang, the then French Minister of Culture in Paris in 1982. In the beginning the festival was a humble burst of musical idealism. Within three decades it became a global success and attracts players and listeners all over the world today.
