BMW Berlin Marathon

Marathon Berlin (1)

At the end of September, the German capital hosts one of the biggest running events in the world: the Berlin Marathon.

More than 40,000 athletes from about 120 countries compete each year, cheered on by many spectators.

Hotspots for Spectators

The most popular places along the route are the Victory Column (0.6 km), the Federal Chancellery and Reichstag (6.5 km), the Friedrichstadtpalast (8 km), the Platz am Wilden Eber (28.5 km), Olivaer Platz (33.5 km) the Memorial Church (35 km), Potsdamer Platz (38.5 km), Unter den Linden (41 km) and of course the finish at the Brandenburg Gate (42 km).

Road Closures and Detours

During the events there will be severe traffic disruptions. All spectators are advised to use the underground and suburban trains. On Saturday afternoon and Sunday, especially in Tiergarten and Mitte, the streets along the marathon route will be closed almost continuously until the end of the event. There will also be road closures in Friedrichshain, Kreuzberg, Neukölln, Schöneberg, Steglitz, Wilmersdorf and Zehlendorf.

Registration for the BMW Berlin Marathon

After the 40,000 starting places for the 2013 BMW Berlin Marathon were snapped up in just three and a half hours, a new registration process was introduced. After a pre-registration phase in which all interested parties were registered, a lottery was held for the starting places. This procedure has proved successful.

Registration for the Lottery for 2026

The phase for the 2026 marathon starts on 25 September 2025 and ends on 6 November 2025. As always, the winners/participants will be selected by lot and automatically informed at the end of November.
