"Revolutionary" May Day demonstration 2024 in Berlin

Thousands of participants are once again expected at the evening demonstration by left-wing groups in Berlin on May 1.

The demonstrations around May Day in Berlin begin this Wednesday, the evening of the so-called Walpurgis Night.

A larger left-wing demonstration entitled "Raise wages, lower rents, create peace" is planned through Wedding from 5 p.m.

Demonstrations in Kreuzberg, Mitte and Grunewald

Later, left-wing women's groups will meet at Mariannenplatz in Kreuzberg under the motto "Take back the night". More than 3000 participants are expected. On Thursday, May 1st, the traditional trade union demonstration will march from Strausberger Platz to Rotes Rathaus in the morning. From midday there will be satirical protest actions in the Grunewald villa district; the police are expecting up to 10,000 participants. In the evening, the traditional "Revolutionary May Day Demonstration" by left-wing groups in Kreuzberg begins at 6 p.m. In total, more than 5,000 police officers from Berlin and other federal states will be deployed at all events over the course of the holiday.

Traffic restrictions and closures

Road users must be prepared for numerous restrictions in the city around May 1. The following areas in particular are affected:

  • Karl-Marx-Allee will be closed between Strausberger Platz and Grunerstrasse between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.
    [Hermannplatz and Südstern will be closed from 8 a.m. until late at night.
  • The area between Baerwaldstraße, Urbanstraße, Hasenheide, Bergmannstraße and Gneisenaustraße will be prepared for closures from 8 a.m.
  • Mariannenplatz will be closed from 12 noon until late at night.
  • Starting at 10 a.m., a bicycle parade will set off from Falkplatz in Prenzlauer Berg via Gleimstraße, Brunnenstraße, Badstraße, Schivelbeiner Straße, Wichertstraße, Prenzlauer Allee, Karl-Liebknecht-Straße and Unter den Linden to Pariser Platz. After an interim rally, the route continues via Straße des 17. Juni, Großer Stern, Hofjägerallee, Lützowplatz, An der Urania, Kleiststraße, Tauentzienstraße, Kurfürstendamm, Hubertusallee, Königsallee and Bismarckallee to Johannaplatz in Grunewald.
  • At 4 p.m., the bicycle parade will set off from Johannaplatz via Hubertusallee, Kurfürstendamm and Schwarzbacher Straße onto the A100 city highway in the direction of Dreieck Neukölln until the Tempelhofer Damm exit. The procession will continue via Tempelhofer Damm, Mehringdamm, Blücherstraße, Zossener Straße, Lindenstraße and Oranienstraße to Oranienplatz.
