The former State Secretary for Culture, Sarah Wedl-Wilson, is to become Berlin's new State Minister for Culture.
She will succeed Joe Chialo (CDU), who only resigned as State Minister (Senator) for Culture on Friday. This was announced by the Governing Mayor Kai Wegner (CDU) in the Rotes Rathaus.
Wegner said of Wedl-Wilson that she was familiar with the challenges facing Berlin's cultural sector. "We want to maintain the high quality of the cultural institutions," he emphasized. At the weekend, the German Cultural Council had argued that Wegner should also take on the position herself - like former Governing Mayor Klaus Wowereit (SPD). With his decision in favor of Wedl-Wilson, Wegner has quickly clarified the matter.
Unlike her predecessor, Wedl-Wilson does not have a CDU party membership. Born in Great Britain in 1969, the long-standing cultural manager not only has experience in cultural administration. She is also considered a long-time expert on the Berlin cultural scene. Before moving to the cultural administration after the start of the black-red Senate at the end of April 2023, she was, among other things, Rector of the Hanns Eisler School of Music in Berlin for several years.
