The Brandenburg Gate is to be illuminated in the European colors in the evening.
This was announced by the Senate Chancellery. The occasion is today's Europe Day. It commemorates the so-called Schuman Declaration 75 years ago and the associated founding of the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC). It is regarded as the forerunner of the European Union.
"We are setting an example for our European community," said Berlin's Governing Mayor Kai Wegner (CDU) about the campaign. Especially in times of global crises, at a time when Russia is at war with Ukraine, it is important to defend democratic values and stand up for stability, freedom and peace.
Berlin's landmark will be illuminated from sunset until midnight, explained a Senate spokeswoman. The European flag shows yellow stars arranged in a circle on a blue background. Just yesterday evening, the Brandenburg Gate was illuminated to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War in Europe: The first sentence of the first article from the German Basic Law "Human dignity shall be inviolable" could be read.
