In view of the heat and drought, residents in some districts are being asked to water young urban trees.
A spokeswoman for the Senate Department for Climate Protection and the Environment said that young trees in particular are dependent on watering due to the drought and the coming heat. "You can't water too much at the moment." They are easily recognizable by the white trunk coating that protects them from excessive sunlight. Older trees generally do not need additional watering.
In principle, the street and green space authorities of the districts are responsible for watering urban trees. However, some districts also repeatedly ask Berliners for help. The districts of Mitte, Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, Reinickendorf, Lichtenberg and Neukölln are currently calling for young trees to be watered. The trees should be watered thoroughly once or twice a week, "preferably less often, but with larger amounts of water (at least 75-100 liters per watering), instead of only small amounts every day," a spokesperson for the Mitte district office said in response to a request. It makes sense to water in the evening or in the morning.
The district of Pankow, on the other hand, announced that young trees are watered by the district office until they are eleven years old and that residents are not generally called upon to water urban trees. "Unfortunately, daily watering only leads to the fine roots remaining in the upper area and not developing properly, which means that the tree cannot take care of itself in the long term and is permanently dependent on additional water," said a spokesperson.
